Tips to Keep Geocoins Traveling
What follows is a collection of tips we have found here and there that might help to keep your geocoins traveling about the world a bit longer:
DRILL A HOLE AND ATTACH A TAG
Many people have taken to drilling a hole in the coins they send out and attaching a laminated or engraved tag to it by using either a cable or keyring.
This accomplished three things …
- It makes the geocoin’s mission readily available to other cachers.
- It puts a hole in a coin … a hole that might just keep a collector (aka. coin thief) from taking it and adding it to his or her collection as it is no longer the “perfect” addition.
- It might just extend the traveling life of your traveler.
DRILLING A HOLE TO ATTACH A TAG
Placing a bit of oil on the tip to keep the bit cool, begin by using a very small drill bit to create your first hole.
The first bite takes the most patience, but once the bit has bit into the material it goes a bit faster.
DON’T PRESS HARD TOWARDS THE END SO AS TO KEEP DAMAGE TO THE ENAMEL ON THE BACKSIDE TO A MINIMUM!
Remember to go so and let the bit do its work. Don’t try to force it.
Patience is definitely your best friend.
