“What A View” @ VDOT Monument

I was both surprised and very pleased when I discovered that geocache “What A View” was hidden at the VDOT Worker’s Monument as it was not all that long ago I submitted the location as a waymark.

It was one of those places that not only does have a great view, but where the monument is an interesting design with an interesting purpose.

The monument honors those state highway workers who lost their lives while working on the state’s various highways.

Using no public funds to build the memorial, it was constructed using donations gathered from “Virginia Department of Transportation employees and retirees, family members, businesses and organizations throughout the state.

The monument utilizes profiles of workers to reflect the diverse workforce as well as the outline of a worker’s profile to symbolize the “missing worker.”

The memorial was dedicated on Sept. 17, 2004.

Not only was the view enjoyable when looking out towards the valley and mountains in the distance, but the field of day lilies in front of the monument itself was incredible to see.
