Paperless Caching – Current Semi-Solution

Before I go on with my process in finding the best solution for me, well, I have to admit that I couldn’t wait to start paperless geocaching. It is not the final solution I am looking for, but it gave me some insight what I want and don’t want and it got me hooked into the idea totally.

With GSAK I manage my geocaches. It creates my stats, keeps all the information handy and helps me to place my caches. I am sure it can do way more than I found out until now, but I’ll save this for another post.

GSAK offers a macro language. Right at the first investigation I found a macro that converts the hints of a cache to POIs I can upload to my etrex Vista HCx. This is great, because it saved a lot of paper and headache finding the paper with the hint we were looking for at the location.

Unfortunately the etrex Vista HCx can’t store the description for the cache. So we were printing all information until I found out GSAK can export HTML pages with the description, hints, latest logs, pictures and more. Since then, I have it generating these pages, upload them to my mobile phone and voila, there we go paperless! Yay!

For traditionals it works like a charm.

For multis we still print out the descriptions though, because paper is always handy with a multi. :) We are looking to change that to paperless too.

I also tried logging in the field. My mobile phone has a standard numeric keyboard and T9. Well, it works, but I always feel slow when entering notes to my phone. I rarely send text messages, because I am so darn slow typing them. Those kids moving their finger so fast that you can hardly see it amaze me all time. So I am looking for another solution. Which reminds me to go on with the search…
