MAGC Event #4

I planned to check and publish this article weeks ago, but never had the chance. Sorry for the delay. I changed the timing accordingly.

A few weeks months ago a new cache notification caught Steffis (aka stefmaus) and my attention. It was an event of the MAGC, virtually just around the corner.

The MAGC is the Military Association of GeoCachers. This group supports (mostly US) troops and relatives coming to a new location, getting to know the area, some people and such. A great idea. We discovered the organization some time ago and planned to get into touch.

So we were fast to log “will attend” and waited for the Saturday of January, 31st to come.

At 1400 hours local time the event was planned to start, although the description said “’round two-ish”. Of course we were set to arrive too late having an appointment planned up to 2:00 PM. And guess what, we arrived in time. “’round two-ish” fitted better, though. The peak of attendance was at 3:30 PM. A big plus of these folks. :)

We were welcomed by Christian and Kelly (aka hzoi), the “owners” of the event and the Steve (aka Big-Red-One). Shortly after us Scott arrived (I lost his username, forgive me). The folks were nice and I learned that speaking English after a few months German only was not so easy. But as time passed I managed it pretty well.

Christian and Steve are coin collectors. What nice coins they had. It didn’t take long before I was writing down all the tracking codes. (Mike, update the stats. I passed you again. ;) )

As time went by more and more people arrived, mostly English speaking military and support personnel with families. They all were very kind and we made quite some connections.

Most notably are the Germericans, a Puerto Rican-American-German family featuring their son Juju, who was running the show. A really nice group. They picked up a travelbug we placed at the event.

Christian and Kelly are moving to Virginia this summer. They will life just a few towns away from Mike’s place. Sometimes the world is really small. Small enough for us to visit more friends next time we visit the states.

This meeting was so great that we will attend the next meetings of the MAGC.  Hey, Steffi has already been invited to the BBQ.

At the end I have to report a lost coin. I planned to place it in my Grandma and Grandpa memorial cache. Well, it’s activated, so it started it’s journey there. A great place as well. Until now, no one logged it though.

I joined the MAGC the same day, but didn’t receive the login data yet. Christian said the person running the sign up-procedure is very busy and it could take some time.

We are looking forward to the next meeting of the MAGC and can’t wait for the BBQ. Great event, hzoi!
