Finding The Smiley

trip-2650-twb

Although I have been a resident of Virginia for many a year, I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina.

So, isn’t it only natural that I would want to find the cache placed right across the street from the high school I graduated from?

I admit to feeling the air of excitement as I parked the mini-van and turned to the handheld GPS unit.

It was a bitterly cold day, yet the enjoyment of the hunt kept me warm.

Looking around, their were few true hiding places with the most likely one being around the massive pole that held up a towering billboard sign over in the field.

My eyes scanned the base of the pole even as I began circling it.

On the backside, I froze in place as a found the largest smiley I had ever seen staring back at me from about eye level on the massive metal post.

Could it mark the cache’s hiding place?

A tentative finger went to pull it back and found it magnet.

Pulling it free, I expected to find a hole underneath that might conceal a micro or bison tube within the heart of the pole, but found nothing but smooth metal.

Then it occurred to me … the smiley was the cache as well as the log.

The cache owner wanted us to sign the back.
