South of the Border

How many times have you been driving for a long distance and had the need to stretch your legs?

When we go on long trips, it adds a whole new dimension of fun when we plan our route ahead of time, taking time to figure out neat caches to stop and look for along the way.

On a January trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., we found just a stopping off point in the form of South of the Border right at the border between South and North Carolina along Interstate 95.

Many consider it a tourist trap of a place, but I find it a nice and fun distraction – a distraction featuring two geocaches!

The first of the two caches is “Pedro’s Bridge.”

The actual cache is hidden about halfway across a pedestrian footbridge which connects South of the Border East to South of the Border West.

As we set out in the direction of the bridge, our 17-month-old’s legs pumped into motion as she burned off penned up energy accumulated from a few hours of being trapped in a carseat.

We found the cache with little problems and in relatively good condition.

Overall, the fun was more in the location of the hide as well as the fun we had in finding it.

We even had our photos taken with Pedro at the foot of the bridge! … and even checked out the gift shop where I thought about adopting a new look!

When we returned to the car, we drove across the street to find the second of the caches before hitting the road and driving several hours more on our journey towards our vacation and my upcoming 100th find!
